COMING SOON... MORE SCREENS. MORE MOVIES. MORE COMMUNITY.
Birmingham has shown up for local cinema in a way we didn’t expect. Screenings have been selling out for several seasons now, and that tells us something: there’s a real hunger for good film and connection to good people.
Our expansion is built around that. More screens and better seats mean there’s always room for you, whether that’s a groundbreaking indie film, a live Q&A, or one of our education programs.
Sidewalk sits at 11,500 square feet today… two screens, a classroom, restrooms, a concession stand and bar. We’re adding 4,500 square feet onto that, and here’s what it actually gets us: two more screens, a bigger classroom, more restrooms, and more lobby and gathering space.
The two new screens are built small on purpose… the kind of room where a 30-person screening feels full instead of empty, so we can run more niche titles, more local films, more repertory picks, more of the movies that deserve a Birmingham audience.
The new classroom is bigger than the one we have now, and it’s built to actually hold a crowd: filmmaker masterclasses, public workshops, and the hands-on programs that we offer each year – Filmmaker Networking Nights, Youth Board, Sidewalk Scramble Short Filmmaking Competition, Film and Media College Fair and so many more.
And the extra lobby and gathering space means there will be plenty of room to breathe between shows, whether that’s grabbing something from the bar or just finding your people before the lights go down.

In 2017-18, Sidewalk Film set out to build Birmingham’s only non-profit independent movie theater and film education space, and our community showed up… contributing $4.5 million to bring the Sidewalk Film Center + Cinema to life. We opened our doors in the Fall of 2019 to rave reviews.
A few months later, the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to close just as we were building awareness of our new home. We kept going anyway. Curbside concessions, pop-up drive-in movies, virtual educational programs, and one of the only in-person film festivals in the country that year, an all-drive-in version of Sidewalk. We reopened in Fall 2020 with just 12 people per screening and a whole new set of safety protocols, and we’ve been growing ever since.
Despite an industry that’s been upended since, shifting production schedules, the rise of streaming, and changing standards for what a theatrical release even means, Sidewalk has delivered on everything we promised our community back in 2017 when we began raising money for our community’s only non-profit, indie cinema:
