Overview
- Join filmmaker and Northwestern professor Clayton Brown for a special, in-person event presented as part of the Southern Circuit series, ahead of the screening of "Who's The We?". Using the film as a case study, Brown will break down a scene to explore how decisions made on location shape what ultimately appears onscreen. From structure, sound, and music to the relationship between footage captured and the story that emerges in the edit, he’ll offer a behind-the-scenes look at the creative process of documentary filmmaking. The conversation will then expand to the realities of bringing an independent documentary across the finish line, including post-production, distribution, acquisition, and the sometimes-surprising technical and legal deliverables required by broadcasters such as PBS. Clayton Brown is a documentary and narrative filmmaker whose work explores the hidden stories and compelling characters that emerge when people pursue their passions. His three most recent co-directed documentaries—The Atom Smashers, The Believers, and We Believe in Dinosaurs—have been distributed nationally and internationally through Gravitas, PBS, 1091, Cinephil, and TVS, and have screened at festivals around the world. This Pay What You Can event offers a unique opportunity to learn directly from an experienced filmmaker. Seating is limited.
