When is the festival?

The festival is presented annually on the last weekend of August.

When will the film schedule be announced?

The schedule is usually announced in mid July.

What kind of films will be shown at the festival?

Sidewalk Film Festival showcases the best in new, independent films. Narratives, documentaries, features, and short films are all featured at the festival, with a special spotlight on Alabama filmmakers.  We screen traditional narratives as well as music videos, animated film, and episodic content.  With a little bit for everyone, you’re sure to find something you enjoy!

Where do festival film screenings and events take place?

Sidewalk takes place at various locations in Downtown Birmingham’s historic theatre district, including:

How can I buy tickets for the festival?

Tickets for the festival usually go on sale in May and the purchase link for Festival Tickets and other events may be found HERE page.

What is SHOUT?

SHOUT LGBTQ Film Festival is Alabama’s first and only film festival celebrating the best, new, independent films made by and about lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and queer people. SHOUT shares festival dates and footprint with Sidewalk. Visit the SHOUT website here for more information.

Is the festival accessible?

All Sidewalk venues are accessible to people with mobility disabilities. Accessible restrooms can be found at all venues and at Sidewalk Central.

What other programming will be at the festival besides films?

Where can I park at the festival?

Sidewalk venues are all within downtown Birmingham’s historic Theatre District and are easily walkable, so there should not be a need to park more than once per day. Please check our Logistics and Travel page for parking lot locations and information.

Are films in the festival rated?

Films in the festival are typically not assigned a rating by the MPAA – G, PG, PG-13, R, etc. Attendees are encouraged to consult the festival program for information on each film’s content. Family-friendly films are screened free of charge during the festival at the Rushton Theatre at the McWane Center on 3rd Ave. N between the Alabama Theatre and 19th St. N. Are there opportunities to volunteer at the festival?

Yes! Volunteers play an integral role in each year’s festival. Volunteers also earn perks like shirts, festival tickets, and party passes. For information about volunteering at the festival, click here.

Does Sidewalk offer educational programming beyond the festival weekend?

What items are prohibited at the festival?

Outside food or beverages (including alcohol), coolers, animals other than service animals, e-cigarettes, and noisemakers of any kind are strictly prohibited. Weapons of any kind, even with a concealed weapons permit, are also prohibited. Photos, videos, or audio recordings of films are not allowed.

Every venue included in Sidewalk is smoke-free. E-cigarettes and other smoking devices are strictly prohibited. Some Sidewalk Party Locations provide smoking areas that will be clearly marked.
