Spotlight Night Encore – Life & Liberty – Public Defender

Andrea Kalin

Public Defender tells the story of a liberal public defender and two of her clients who participated in the January 6th Capital riot. The film allows a look at how different political sides can find a common denominator. Heather Shaner, the public defender, shows her deep belief that everyone deserves representation and a fair trial even if she does not align with their ideologies. The film allows the viewer to look at how different narratives play within us and others. It creates a forum for discussion of our differences while being respectful of each other as people with opposing viewpoints. Shaner has true compassion for her clients and it is felt in the film. The viewer is able to see people simply not write off those they disagree with but find a place to have a dialogue with each other and perhaps see progression. Change is even seen in one of Shaner’s clients. -Screening Committee Member Hayes Killian
