Somewhere in Texas. Two lovers, Ruth and Bob, run from the sheriff after an early morning bank robbery. Ruth shoots down a deputy, but Bob takes the rap. Facing a lifetime behind bars, he swears to return to her and their expected child, to unearth their buried loot, and to start a new life together. And a couple of years later, he makes good on his promise–breaking away from jail and setting foot on a long trek across a barren landscape. In his way is a determined Sheriff’s department as well as a dangerous pack of bounty hunters. What he doesn’t know, though, is that Ruth, living a more simple life, might be having a change of heart.

Saints captures many of the elements that define a classic western: the anti-hero, good guys and bad guys, hats and gunfights, and breathtaking landscapes shot on 35mm scope. It also has the timeless feel of a fairy tale or of an epic poem, a tonal quality that David Lowery has perfected since St. Nick and “Pioneer.” Carried by a seasoned all-star cast (Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, Ben Foster, Keith Carradine, and Nate Parker) Ain’t Them Bodies Saintsstands as one of the cinematic highlights of the year.
